Molecule to Cognition MED probe

Molecule to Cognition lab

The MED system is well suited for experiments using acute slices as well as slice (and cell) cultures. The low impedance of of Pt. black electrodees (7-10 khom at 1 kHz tycpially) enables to acquire several types of signals (from slow-wave to spike signals) easily. Multi-electrode arrays are widely used in studies of the central (CNS: e.g. Cortex, Hippocampus; retina, Suprachiasmatic Nucleus, SCN) and peripheral (PNS: e.g. Dorsal Root Ganglion, DRG) nervous system, as well as myocardial and other excitable tissue (e.g. smooth muscle). Extracellular stimulation and recording can be combined with patch clamping, microscopic visualization, or other methods (e.g. Ca ++ imaging) used to examine relationships between structure and function.

State-of-the-art 3T MRI machine (Siemens MAGNETOM Trio, A Tim System 3T with 12 and 32-channel coil) allows us to measure human brain activity underlying various sensory, motor, perceptual, and cognitive behaviors. In addition, high-resolution MR-compatible visual stimulation goggle with eye tracking and response recording devices are available in our MRI center. Our MRI machine is also equipped with newly developed protocols and software including zoomed EPI and online motion correction algorithm for real-time fMRI. Other facilities include 3 psychophysics rooms for visual experiment as well as an eye tracker (EyeLink 1000, SR Research) and several haploscopes for dichoptic visual stimulation.

Ⅰ. Neuralynx Electrophysiological Data Acquisition System - Neuralynx cheetah system allows collecting electrophysiological signals through multiple channels (expandable up to 1024 channels). For example, it is possible to carry out electrophysiologically recording multiple single unit responses simultaneously in freely behaving animals.
Ⅱ. Eight-core machine - A computer with eight CPUs working in parallel with large memory capacity to analyze a large dataset such as electrophysiological dataset recorded in parallel from multiple channels.
Ⅲ. Stereotaxic surgical system - Stereotaxic surgical systems are used to surgically target a specific brain region by putting the animal’s head in a multi-dimensional coordinates. For example, certain brain regions can be lesioned or electrodes can be implanted in a specific brain area through stereotaxic neurosurgery.
