Important Dates and Deadlines

NOTE : Applying on the BCS website doesn’t mean that you are automatically applied to SNU. This online application is for the BCS faculty to see the applicants in advance to make decisions for the interviews on the 16th of May. Therefore, students have to submit the applications both to the SNU Admissions Office and the BCS Admissions Office. Please be aware of the deadlines of both SNU and BCS.

Deadlines for BCS admissions
  1. On-line Application Deadline
    Sat 5/09/09 by 6:00 pm.
  2. Submission of Documents
    Deadline - Wed 5/13/09 by 6:00 pm.
    The required documents should arrive at the BCS by this date. Applicants must have already submitted the online application and have their application number.
  3. Interviews
    Sat 5/16/09 from 1:00 ~ 4:00 pm.
    (Applicants who will be taking interviews on the 16th should participate in the symposium on the 15th. To learn more about the symposium, click here.)

Deadlines for SNU admissions

    The required documents should arrive at the SNU Office of Admissions by this date. Applicants must have already submitted the online application.

Eligibility

For the Master’s Degree Program
He or she must hold a Bachelor’s degree, or is considered by the admission committee to have an acceptable intellectual competence at the level of someone holding an equivalent or higher degree.
For the Doctoral Degree Program
He or she must hold a master’s degree, or is considered by the admission committee to have an acceptable intellectual competence at the level of someone holding an equivalent or higher degree.
For Both Master’s and Doctoral Degree Programs
Applicants should submit a score report of a recognized English proficiency test (TOEFL, TEPS, IELTS, TOEIC, etc.). Native speakers of English are exempt from this requirement. A score higher than 664 for TEPS or 83 for TOEFL (IBT) is required. The test results should be sent to BCS Admissions Office by May 25, 2009.

Criteria
  1. Admissions decisions are based on the candidate’s academic achievements and potential, as well as his or her personal accomplishments and demonstration of leadership.
  2. The admissions committee reviews a number of factors: records of past studies (such as grade point average or GPA), the study plan, personal statement, and letters of recommendation. Other achievement records and specific qualifications such as language proficiency are also taken into consideration. The candidate’s application is reviewed in the context of the level of studies completed, quality of achievement, and characteristics of institutions attended. Finally, the appropriateness of the applicant’s academic goals and suitability of preparation for the proposed program of studies are assessed.
  3. Interviews, examinations, and/or additional documents may be required from the applicant, based on the admission policy of the specific college or department, if the applicant is applying to the College of Arts, College of Music or the Department of Physical Education. The applicant will be notified individually as necessary.

  3. After completing the pre-applying to BCS page, you will be given an application number. Write your application number on the envelope when you mail the packet of required documents to BCS.

NOTE
  • Documents you need to submit when pre-applying online are: application and study plan.
  • Documents you need to mail to BCS are: 1 letter of recommendation, transcripts, and a score report of a recognized English proficiency test (TOEFL, TEPS, IELTS, TOEIC, etc.).
  • Native speakers of English are exempt from this requirement.

  2. If you are currently enrolled in an undergraduate program, you should submit an official document that indicates your expected date of graduation.
  3. There files are provided as a MS Word 97~2003 template file.

Preparation of the Required Documents

Form 1 - Application Form
Form 1 contains your personal information.
Please specify your desired area of study.
Graduate Applicants: Indicate the college or professional school and corresponding major.
Form 2 - Study Plan and Personal Statement
The Study Plan should state your academic goals and career aspirations. You may include questions that you hope to answer through your program of study and/or a timeline for how you plan to meet your objectives. It is advised that you review the requirements for the desired degree.
We recommend that you discuss your academic goals with a teacher or professor prior to composing your study plan.
Personal Statement is an opportunity for you to convey information about yourself and your accomplishments that could not be adequately expressed through other parts of the application.
Include family background, academic achievements, extracurricular commitments and accomplishments, volunteer work, employment experience, or your reasons for applying to SNU.
Form 3 - Recommendation
One recommendation from teachers or professors is required.
Complete your part of this form and give it, along with a stamped and addressed envelope, to a recommender who knows you well. Be sure to give her/him adequate time to complete the forms before the application deadline. Recommendations should be sealed in an official envelope and signed across the back by the recommenders.
Your recommender should give us her/his appraisals of the contributions you made in their classes or academic field. S/he is asked to give her/his personal impressions of your character, intellectual ability, aptitude in research, and the quality of your previous work and potential.
English Proficiency
Applicants should submit a score report of a recognized English proficiency test (TOEFL, TEPS, IELTS, TOEIC, etc.). Native speakers of English are exempt from this requirement.
Note: We only accept TOEFL scores sent to us directly by ETS. The official ETS code of SNU is 7972. You may submit a photocopy of the Examinee's Score Report for review purposes only, but this is not a substitute for an official score report.
